Linux Access

IEEE is now offering Linux computer access to its members. These are some very powerful machines with 6GB of RAM and 2 Intel Xeon E5405 2GHz Quad-Core processors. That's 8 cores of computing ability!! They all have MATLAB R2007a installed which you can use from the command line or by X-Window forwarding.

To obtain an account, email sooknarine@jhu.edu. After verifying that you are a member and come to our meetings, you will receive an email with your username and temporary password. You must first SSH to rho.ece.jhu.edu and run the 'passwd' command to reset your temporary password. If you run 'passwd' on any other machine, it will only update your local password and not your network-wide password.

There are 10 machines in total. If one is busy or slow, just connect to another. SSH to any of the following computers (append ".ece.jhu.edu" to the name):

  • stark
  • lannister
  • tyrell
  • martel
  • greyjoy
  • baratheon
  • tully
  • frey
  • umber
  • targaryen

MATLAB is located in /usr/local/matlab/bin
Cadence is located in /cadence

If you don't know how to SSH or do X-Window forwarding, look forward for our upcoming TELL on the subject! For MATLAB tips, see the MATLAB TELL.
